Why Birding?

Birding is cooler than ever, as evidenced by the number of motion picture films (A Birder’s Guide to Everything, The Big Year, The Central Park Effect), and the regular appearance of birding-related articles in major media outlets such as the New York Times, the Washington Post, and more.

What you can DO as a birder is also cooler than ever.  You can figure out a bird song using a mobile app that works just like Shazam!; you can use high-tech radar to monitor bird migration; you can enter your bird sightings into the eBird database and have it spit out your state and county lists, thus beginning a life-long record of bird sightings now, so you’ll never forget how and where you started.  You can express your interest in birds through photography, blogging, and joining young birder field trips at the local, state and national level.

And who knows, maybe someday you will be one of the ornithologists to discover a new species, bring a species back from the brink of extinction, write a new field guide, and travel the world for birds!  Or, you can just kick back and watch birds.  It’s all up to you!
